If you are a man with over-developed breasts, you may be a candidate for a male breast reduction in Houston (also known as Gynecomastia surgery). Likewise, if you have excess or sagging tissue in the chest area after losing a significant amount of weight, then male breast reduction surgery can help restore a smoother, firmer chest contour.
What is Gynecomastia?
Overly large breasts in men are not all that uncommon and can occur for a variety of different reasons. The condition known as Gynecomastia may simply be hereditary, but can also develop as a result of hormonal changes, the use of certain drugs or disease. It is often triggered by hormonal imbalance and can occur in men of any age. When there is a decrease in the amount of the hormone testosterone compared with estrogen, the result can be the stimulation of breast tissue development. Gynecomastia can often occur later in life as testosterone levels tend to gradually decline as men get older.
Gynecomastia can also develop in adolescent males once they hit puberty and is typically the result of the normal hormonal changes that occur at this time. For the vast majority of young males with Gynecomastia, the enlarged breasts will usually shrink or disappear as they get older. If the condition persists into adulthood however, then male breast reduction may be a viable treatment option to consider. Persistent Gynecomastia present in males over the age of 17 is less likely to subside.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
While Gynecomastia by itself is not usually harmful, it can have negative effects on a man’s self-esteem and cause him to alter his behavior. Men with over-developed breasts may avoid situations where they would have to appear in front of others shirtless, like swimming for instance. If Gynecomastia is affecting the quality of your life, then surgical treatment is the quickest and most effective solution to getting rid of excess breast tissue.
Unfortunately, because it is not a subject most men like to talk about, many are not aware that it can be corrected by a fairly simple, outpatient procedure. Excess breast tissue or fat can be removed with liposuction, excision or a combination of both techniques. Excess skin can be excised as well during your male breast reduction procedure.
Recovering from Gynecomastia Surgery
In most cases, patients with sedentary jobs are able to return to work in just a few days. If your job involves strenuous physical activity such as heavy lifting, you will need to wait a bit longer before returning. Rigorous physical activity and upper body workouts should be avoided for the first few weeks. Exercises that stress the chest wall should be avoided for the first 3 – 4 weeks to allow the treatment area to heal properly. After 6 weeks, most patients will be able to return to their normal exercise programs unhindered. After male breast reduction surgery, patients will be given a compressive garment or vest to wear during the weeks following the procedure. This will help alleviate swelling and accelerate the healing process. The majority of swelling will subside within the first 2 – 3 weeks. However, some residual swelling will remain for the first few months. Final results of male breast reduction surgery usually become evident at around 3 – 6 months post-op.
